Gcina Sam Maduna | Pastel on Paper

About the artist

Sam Maduna born in Alexandra Township, presently lives in Ennerdale, near Soweto, Johannesburg.

Maduna explores portraiture through his intuitive sense of colour, coupled with a technical mastery of pastel. Self- taught, his own tangible sensitivity enables a penetrating depiction of his subject matter, perceptively observed and interpreted with his probing eye. He catches moments of intimacy whilst avoiding any photographic interpretation.

He has an ability to decode the inner spiritual content of his subject, his focus on the idiosyncratic defines both the personality and the character of his sitter. He chooses to depict ordinary people involved in their daily activities, transforming the potentially mundane into exceptional colour bursts of harmony and musicality.

Selected as a Renault artist in 2005, Maduna has exhibited around South Africa and France. His work is held in private and corporate collections in the UK, USA, France and South Africa.
